Project to close 46 fire control centres and replace them with regional centres being discussed by M

08 February 2010

PLANS for closing 46 fire control centres and replacing them with nine regional centres are being discussed at the House of Commons this afternoon (Mon Feb 8).

MPs sitting in on the Communities and Local Government Committee are hearing from a variety of speakers in the one-off evidence session.

The FiReControl project is part of the Fire and Resilience Programme, which is reforming the Fire and Rescue Services.

The committee will consider the progress with the project so far, the reasons for the cost and time overruns which the project has experienced, and what, if any, changes need to be made to the Government's plans for proceeding with the project.

Not everyone is in favour of the project.

The Fire Brigades Union has launched a campaign against regionalisation of the control centres.
