Green light
 | | Trader Bradley Richards with the Greens' Dr Shahrar Ali |
The campaign to save Willesden market from closure has been given the ultimate green light.
Dr Shahrar Ali from the Brent and Harrow Green Party gave our crusade his seal of approval after visiting the site and talking to traders about their uncertain future.
"I fully support the campaign," he said after his visit.
"It is important the community has easy access to fruit and vegetable from places like Willesden Market.
"I will be speaking to Jenny Jones (London Assembly Member for the Green Party) and it will be raised at the next assembly meeting."
The Times launched the Save our Market campaign with local resident Delia Witherall after discovering the traders will pack up their stalls on the unused Church Road car park for the last time in February.
After 21 years of serving the vibrant eclectic community, the market is being forced out to make way for an ambitious mixed-use development.
As the market is located on private property the council has no legal obligation to help either the traders or the community, but the campaign is calling for it to adopt a moral one.
Dr Ali's support has added strength to the campaign which also has backing from members of the Labour, Liberal Democrats and Conservative parties.
Give your support to our campaign by sending your views to the Times editor at tim.cole@archant.co.uk, or write to Cumberland House, 80 Scrubs Lane, London, NW10 6RF.
Alternatively you can sign our online, visit the traders' stalls to add your name to the 1,600 signatures already collected, on Wednesday or Saturday at the market.
